In late 1995 a group of Vietnam Veterans met at the Noble Park R.S.L. one Thursday afternoon for a few drinks and a quiet chat. John Meehan, a Vietnam Veteran who had been doing Pension claims for a number of years, had been invited by the then President, Dave Russell, himself a Vietnam Veteran, to come to Noble Park R.S.L. to meet some of the local Vietnam Veterans. After this initial meeting it was decided to make it a weekly gathering and those in attendance passed the word around. After several months the number of Vietnam Veterans attending each week had grown considerably and was continuing to grow. The V.V.A.A. Melbourne Sub-Branch at this time was looking to form smaller Sub-Branches in the suburbs and the group at Noble Park decided to approach the State Branch with a view to forming a Sub-Branch at Noble Park. Permission was granted, and the Noble Park Sub-Branch had it's first meeting and formed a committee, comprising of Ray McCarthy, President, John Pilkington, Secretary, Wally Sosnowski, Treasurer, John Meehan, Senior Vice President, Brian Green, Junior Vice President, Committeemen Neville Johnson, Jim Pearse.
In April? 1996 at Frankston R&SL the Sub-Branch was inducted into the State body and our membership has grown steadily over the years. In 1999 we had 208 financial Vietnam Veterans, making us the largest Sub-Branch in Victoria.
During our life as a Sub-Branch we have had many happy events as well as some sadder moments, the passing of one of our founding members, Jim Pearse, being one of the saddest.
Our happier moments have included our annual events that have become extremely popular and well supported. The Long Tan Darts Shield Competition, which led a nomadic life for many years and seemed doomed, has now found a new home at Noble Park R&SL, courtesy of the V.V.A.A. Sub-Branch.
Celebrating Vietnam Veterans' Day in August we conduct an annual Dinner Dance (The Hoa Long Dance), held on the Saturday following Vietnam Veterans' Day.
